We had a pretty busy week last week, as we embarked on our annual road trip down south. This year, we decided to explore the beauty of County Mayo, Ireland. We absolutely love discovering what our own country has to offer, and despite the unpredictable weather, we cherished the experience with the positive outlook of our new fridge magnet, saying, "Feck it, sure it will be grand."
Here are some family-friendly places we stayed during our adventure: 1. Clayton Hotel Sligo: We made a stop here to break up the journey, booking it through booking.com. Though it stretched our budget a bit, the stay was worth every penny. The family room was spacious enough to accommodate six people, with two separate rooms that allowed Pearse and Darragh to have their own space. The hotel's pool, food, and service were amazing, and we can't wait to visit again. 2. Air B&B in Belmullet: If you're looking for a remote spot just minutes away from a beach in County Mayo, this is the perfect place. Close to Belmullet town, it felt like a home away from home, recently renovated with all the modern comforts. When the weather wasn't great, we loved cozying up on the sofa and watching movies. Jenny, the owner, went above and beyond to provide little luxuries that made our stay even better. 3. Westport Woods Hotel: We booked the family midweek and had a wonderful stay. Although we could have used an extra single bed in the family room, the experience was still enjoyable. The hotel offered delicious food, and the kids loved spending time at the pool, with plenty of space to run around. The staff, especially Kay, were lovely and even helped us make reservations at a local restaurant and booked us a taxi so we could both enjoy a glass of wine. The hotel is about a 15min walk into beautiful Westport. During our trip, we explored some incredible places in County Mayo: 1. Achill Island: This stunning island, accessible by bridge (phew, no boats!), offered breathtaking beaches and scenic drives. We had a great time watching kite surfers in action. The kids loved visiting the Aquarium, especially Splash the fish, who provided lots of fun for everyone. We enjoyed delicious meals at The Currach restaurant and Ár Bia Mara food van. Before leaving, we had a pint of Guinness at the charming Lynotts, the smallest pub in Achill. 2. Westport House: This family-friendly destination provided us with an amazing day. The entry fee of approx 70Euro allowed us a full day access to the Pirate Adventure Park, a house tour, pedal swans, and the virtual gaming area. The kids loved every second, and the picturesque grounds offered perfect picnic spots. 3. Croagh Patrick: For outdoor enthusiasts seeking a challenge, Croagh Patrick was an excellent adventure for us and the kids. Gerard and the boys, aged 8 and 7, made it to the top, and the sense of achievement was unforgettable. If you plan to climb the mountain, ensure your kids are fit and ready, or you can always do a part of it and return to the base. I have included some top tips on my latest Instagram post. Our favourite place to eat in Westport was ll Vulcano, a small Italian restaurant offering family-friendly vibes and delicious pizzas. We also enjoyed their risotto and house red wine. I would recommend one kids pizza between two children due to the large portion sizes. When holidaying in Ireland, you should be prepared for changeable weather. We found our Wild and Free Cobes to be lifesavers, wearing them during evening walks on the beach, whether it was raining or not.
