Recommendations for a family trip to Ballycastle.

This week we are expecting a fantastic week of weather and it's the perfect time to plan some day trips. Recently Gerard and the kids and I went on a fantastic trip to the North Coast so I wanted to share some recommendations so that you too can create some wonderful memories with your family.

We stayed in Ballycastle in the lovely Marine Hotel . If you would like to make a booking you can still use the Discount code DIGG10 to receive 10% off until the end of August. However you can also have many great day trips to the area without staying over. Pack a picnic and hit the road early and make a day of it.

Places to eat

Ursa Minor A beautiful little bakehouse in the heart of Ballycastle to grab some croissants, cake and coffee.

O'Connors Bar Serves food from 11am to 9pm. The atmosphere in this bar is fantastic. It is well known for its live music sessions. We had a delicious meal there and I will never forget that Hake in Thai Yellow Curry. Highly recommend for a family meal.

Marconis - Marine Hotel Great Family friendly restaurant in Marine Hotel. The kids menu has a great variety and a great price. They also do a great Espresso Martini.

Mortons Fish and Chips - This is a must when visiting Ballycastle. We sat by the harbour and shared scampi, cod goujons and chips with lashings of salt and vinegar.

The Dessert Bar - Right on the promenade, this is a great place to treat the kids and the adults for that matter. So many fantastic ice cream creations to choose from . My kids are still talking about it.

Things to do

Playpark - The play park which is right on the promenade in Ballycastle is fantastic. It is suitable for all ages with plenty of benches and areas for adults to chill out and let the kids play. Straight across the road from The Dessert Bar and very close to Morton's Fish and Chips, you could literally spend a few hours here.

Beach - Ballycastle Beach is stunning. Perfect for letting the kids paddle and build sandcastles while you relax and take in the beautiful surroundings. We loved strolling along the beach in the evening and watching the little lights come on along the promenade.

Sheans Horse Farm - A great activity to do with the family. The whole team is brilliant especially Treise. They make everyone feel very safe and confident while on the horses. We had the best time as a family and it is something we will talk about for years to come. I highly recommend booking in advance.

Rathlin Island - Book the Ferry in advance and enjoy a trip to the beautiful Rathlin Island. Hop on the shuttle bus which should be waiting when you arrive on the island (remember to bring cash for the shuttle bus). It will take you to the Seabird Sanctuary and will tell you the history of the island along the way.

Stop off in McCuaigs Bar for fish and chips and a pint of Guinness. Let the children play on the little beach and play park while you take in the fresh sea air. This is a place of unspoilt beauty with very little to do except appreciate the peace and quiet.

So if you want a family day out on a budget, pack your picnic and spend at the playpark and the beach on Ballycastle promenade. Or perhaps over the summer try out different activities mentioned above on different days.

I know you are going to love Ballycastle and I hope you make lovely memories with your family.

Love Caroline x
